Research Assistant (Project)
The position is offered for a period of three years. The starting date is 1st September 2025. The position is part-time (75 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 75 %).
The third-party funded project ‘3DTrab - Virtual 3D models as synthetic training data for automated image analysis of insect biodiversity surveys’, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the area of ‘Scientific literature supply and information systems’ (LIS), is developing a user-friendly hardware and software system for detecting and recognising insects from collection samples. For this purpose, synthetic training data will be generated from 3D models (sub-unit 1, TU Darmstadt), a workflow and an image acquisition system will be developed (sub-unit 2, University of Marburg), AI methods for insect recognition will be trained (sub-unit 3, University of Marburg) and a web-based software system for a user-friendly application will be created (sub-unit 4, GFBio). The advertised position includes the management of sub-unit 2, the coordination between the sub-units and organises application tests with stakeholders in the field of insect monitoring.
Tasks:
- leading the development of the image acquisition system, if applicable by adapting existing systems (e. g. DiversityScanner)
- responsibility for data acquisition incl. coordination of student assistants
- coordination of the sub-areas of the project
- organisation of project meetings as well as planning and implementation of user tests
- documentation of project results and coordination of data organisation
Profile:
- MSc-degree or equivalent in a natural science subject
- strong teamwork and organisational skills and an ability to work in an independent scientific manner
- knowledge of programming languages as well as technical affinity and interest in hardware/software development
- preferrably basic knowledge of entomology
- very good written and spoken English
- personal motivation with suitability for the advertised position
