Postdoctoral researcher (all genders welcome)

Georg-August-Universität Göttingen
Landkreis Göttingen, Niedersachsen
Vollzeit
vor 20 Stunden
At the University of Göttingen -Public Law Foundation-, CBL - Nachwuchsgruppe Landschaftsresilienz, there is a position as
Postdoctoral researcher (all genders welcome)
Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L/100%
to be filled. Starting date is as soon as possible. The position is limited to three years.

The successful candidate will carry out research within the newly established junior research group and competence center “Landscape resilience” (Kompetenzzentrum Landschaftsresilienz) at the University of Göttingen, Germany, which is funded by the Eva Mayr-Stihl Stiftung, based at the Campus Centre of Biodiversity and Sustainable Land Use (CBL).

Background:
In times of climate change, forestry and agricultural land use in Germany and world-wide face enormous challenges to ensure the long-term provision of forestry and agricultural products and ecosystem services. To develop strategies for adapting land use in this way, we need to understand what makes land use and entire landscapes resilient to climate change. Thus, the research group focuses on assessing the resilience of landscapes to climate change across the sectoral boundaries of forestry and agricultural sciences. The candidate will develop new monitoring and modeling approaches to assess landscape resilience and retrieve land use strategies to promote tailored solutions for resilient landscapes.

Tasks:
The main task of the postdoctoral researcher will be to conduct research on assessing landscape resilience by harnessing the potential of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs)—such as biophysical parameters, land surface temperature, and evapotranspiration—through the integration of remote sensing data (from satellite and UAV platforms), in-situ measurements, and ecosystem modelling approaches. The aim is to better understand shifts in ecosystem functioning associated with land use and land cover dynamics as well as recent disturbances, especially droughts and wildfires, to ultimately derive resilience metrics from both observed and simulated system responses.
The researcher is also expected to publish results in high-impact international journals, contribute to the acquisition of third-party funding, and support ongoing research activities within the junior research group, including co-supervising doctoral students and student theses.

Requirements:
The successful candidate should be a researcher with an excellent scientific record of innovative and creative international research activities and publications. The person
  • must hold a PhD in a field relevant to the assessment of landscape resilience, such as environmental sciences, geosciences, forest or agricultural sciences, with a focus on remote sensing, environmental monitoring and modelling, or geoinformatics
  • must have excellent methodological knowledge in remote sensing, environmental monitoring or modelling
  • must have a high interest and experience in interdisciplinary work, proven by participation in preferably interdisciplinary projects, publications and/or (international) outreach activities
  • should have demonstrated expertise in working with one or several Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) or related environmental indicators, using remote sensing data from satellite and UAV platforms and their integration with in-situ measurements and geodata
  • should have demonstrated experience with field work; willingness to supervise field work on test sites in Germany
  • should have excellent communication skills, demonstrated in e.g. teaching and supervision, project coordination, etc.
  • must have a driver's license (class B), an EU remote pilot license (A2) is a bonus
  • must be proficient in English, German is a plus
What we offer:
We offer an attractive research environment with a 3-year full-time funded early career researcher position, with support for travel and conference attendance and access to facilities and equipment. The university provides a broad range of opportunities for professional development and career advancement for postdoctoral researchers, flexible working hours and home office possibility, paid time off as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment with a strong commitment to diversity and equity.
With its almost 300-years old university, Göttingen is a vibrant German town with a vivid academic atmosphere. According to international rankings, the University of Göttingen is one of the leading universities in both Germany and Europe for Forest Sciences and Agricultural Sciences. The excellent environment at the CBL with leading scientists in these fields provides a unique opportunity to pursue one’s own research within a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment.

Your application should include (in the following order, compiled in one pdf): letter of motivation, CV including names of reference contacts, half-page research concept for the postdoctoral research of three years, list of publications, certificates and transcripts.
